As most of you already know I’m learning to crochet.
And so I’ve got a blanket in progress upstairs using the granny square stitch, and another downstairs using a mesh/trellis stitch. They are coming along nicely (I think). I work on one, or the other, each day for a little while at a time, usually after eating lunch or dinner. =) Later on I plan on tackling some things that are a bit more complex or detailed, but for now it’s good practice. =D

I was running out of the multi colored yarn, and the store was out at the time, so I started a beige border on it. I snagged a multi-color not long after so I’ve switched back. I’m thinking of doing multi-colored, and then a band of beige and a band of multi color to finish.

I’m alternating the pink and the purple strips as I go with this one. I think it looks pretty so far. =)

It took me a long while to get things organized, but I finally got my fiddly little things put away so I could take some photo’s of the Rec Room *lol*

Here’s a wide shot of the almost tidied up computer/craft area on the raised area…

And a wide shot standing at the computer/craft area looking towards the other end of the room…

And a couple closer shots of my work station..

And my new craft area..

I still have some tidying left to do, but all in all the space is set up for now.

Such a lovely floor now. Looks so much better than the old red tiles and cement it was before. Yes?

On the 8th we picked up (and by ‘picked up’ I mean had delivered *lol*) the flooring we wanted from Rona. It’s a 12mm HDF laminate in Cherry. =) So pretty !

It was pretty easy to snap together and even the cuts were so easy to do. We zipped through the flooring in the Rec room.

As you can see, the bunny condo had to be moved to the side, and then moved again to the finished part once the trim was pounded in.

After we made it out to the hallway we stopped for a few to put the rest of the trim along the rec room walls and flooring, completing the room. *squee*

After getting the sub floor down on one part of the room we started working on the raised area of the room.

First we measured and cut the 2×4′s we would need, and then we pieced them together and added bracers through out.

Once the bits were all in place we attatched them together, using both screws and gorilla glue, then we anchored it all to the wall.

Once we were happy with the layout we threw in some insulation for noise buffer and started working on the plywood.

And there you go, one raised area in the rec room! *hahaha*

Because we were putting down vinyl tile there, instead of laminate flooring, we painted on a layer of the primer made for increasing adhesion.

And then the vinyl tiles started getting applied..

We opted or black and brown. Aaron snuck in four white tiles, so we put them in the center for a pretty eye catching look.

Once the tile bits were all down we put the trim along the walls to hide the seams, and a flooring strip along the front before going back to putting in the sub-flooring.

Doing pretty good so far, we made it into the Rec Room area with the sub flooring..

We had to do this room in stages, as we built the rabbit condo in the room earlier on, and it was too big to move out unless we took it apart (not happening).

First we worked on one part of the room…

.. And once close to half of the room was complete we paused on the sub floor and started working on the raised area we wanted to build.. (In the next post)

After Aaron got back home from his trip to San Francisco we got started on the main project.. the flooring !
First he wanted to do a trim/shelf thing along the cement foundation bit that sticks out..

He did 1×6′s and 1×4′s to create the look he wanted, and then tacked up some trim above it to finish it up a bit more.

Directly after getting up all of the trim/shelf bits he wanted, Aaron started to load sub floor pieces in and quickly piece them together..

It was a pretty smooth flowing process until we made it to the door way *haha* That’s when the fiddly pieces needed to be cut, but all in all we got things down and started in to the hallway.

After I was happy enough with my progress in Aaron’s office space I cleaned up and went bed. Boy that was a full and messy day.

Bright and early the next morning I drug my sore body out of bed grabbed a coffee and headed back downstairs to start on the room again.

I did caulking all along the seams and cleaned up around the window as best I could and, once all of that had dried, I then primed and painted everything.

Basic primer and Eggshell white paint from Wal-Mart. Bargain! =) I had also brought home some pre-mixed “Chocolate Kiss” brown paint to use to refresh all of the shelves in his space. While I was waiting for all of the walls to dry I worked on cleaning up and painting his shelving. That took about two coats, but the chocolate brown was a huge improvement on them.

A meal break later and I was back downstairs and spent the last bit of the evening re-mounting all of the wall shelf brackets, putting up the newly painted shelves and peeling off painters tape. Not too shabby for a short gal.

Below are some pictures of after the painting and shelf re-mounting, but before all the painters tape was down..

It took a little practice, but I think I have the granny square figured out.

I had the starting point pretty much down..

and then, after a few round attempts I finally got the count method worked out and voilà!… Granny Square!

Instead of the traditional way of creating many many little squares and then stitching them together, I have opted for making a single Granny Square themed blanket…

Progress photo’s Added 12-18-2011

Getting quite a lot done on the granny square blanket. It’s about 3′x3′ so far

Being new to crocheting I sadly didn’t buy enough skeins of the multi color yarn, and the store didn’t have any more currently, so I had to change off to a new color. I chose a beige skein and I think that it looks alright so far. =)
